What is Corrosion?
Corrosion is the process of collapsing of materials as a
result of electro chemical, chemical or other reactions. In this, rusting is a
part of corrosion and is a chemical process which results in the formation of
red or orange coating, which is one the surface of metals. Metal corrodes when
it reacts with many other substances such as hydrogen, oxygen or even bacteria.
It can also happen when metals like steel are placed under too much pressure
which causes the material to crack.
The types of Corrosion are: Uniform, or General attack,
Galvanic, or two-metal corrosion, Crevice corrosion, Pitting, Inter-granular
corrosion, Elective leaching, or parting, Erosion corrosion, and Stress
corrosion.
When metals are damaged, they are easily oxidized and hence
lose electrons to oxygen in air and water, thus and oxide is formed in the
metals when oxygen is reduced. Forrest, Roetheli and brown in an instructive
research proved that corrosion occurs through various different experiments.
