School Tests

Anyone with a formal education will have had the experience of successfully springing over the hurdles of examination during his/her school life.  Having school tests originated from the need of a method to evaluate the knowledge acquired by a student after he/she attended a class. But, over the course of time, tests slowly got derailed into being an exercise to evaluate the memory of a student. Tests actually benefit students by preparing them to perform well and endure pressure situations which they will definitely have to face in life.  Schools of the new era have come out of the darkness of grades, into the lucent and radiant world of knowledge. Now tests are used to understand students, so that the teachers have a view on their special strengths and weakness. There are a number of reasons why such testing is good; it paints a clearer picture of...

Grading

Evaluation of the knowledge acquired by a student is as important as education itself. Grading is a process that helps to evaluate the proficiency of a student. Ranging from A to F or from 0 to 10, grading is the method followed by today’s schools to identify the calibre of different students. There are many advantages of grading, first being the ease in assessing a child’s performance. Grading helps a parent or a teacher understand how a child is doing in studies. It gives a clearer perspective than marks, as the grades directly portray how the child has performed in exams. Keeping a record of the grades obtained by a student over the years helps in understanding the learning progress of the student. Another advantage of grading is that it motivates students to achieve good grades and do better in each exam. The downside of grading is that it shadows a child from divergent thinking. Students tend to learn only by keeping exams in mind and not indulge in intellectual expansio...

Born on 20 July 1873 Alberto Santos – Dumont is a Brazi lian aviation pioneer and inventor. His name has an indispensable position in the list of people who significantly tailored the development of both heavier-than-air and lighter-than-air aircraft. He was known as the father of Aviation by his countrymen, but Alberto preferred himself to be known as the very first 'Sportsman of the air'. He was always interested in aviation and learned about hot air ballooning. It was not after long, he began piloting balloons by himself and designing his very own ones. He flew his first air balloon called "Bresil", which could lift 114.4 lbs. This took place in 1898 on the 4th of July. Later on he designed steerable balloons which could be propelled in the direction the pilot wishes and not just the wind direction alone. Though dirigible balloons were a previous experiment, it was Dumont who was successful in flying it. Dumont was the first to achieve flight of a powered...

Critical Thinking

Learning to think critically is one of the most important skills that today's children need. In today's rapidly changing world, children should be able to do much more than repeat a list of facts they studied in class. They should be critical thinkers capable of processing information sensibly. The future of the world should be equipped with the ability to compare and contrast in order to generate high quality thinking. Reading is the best way for a student to develop his/her way of foreseeing things in life. Reading about different incidents and experiences helps a child refine his/her theories on what causes things to happen. It also gives them a close-to-life experience on what can happen in life and also gives them insight on how skilled people dealt with it. Guiding a child’s critical thinking will help him/her acquire a clear mind and will have a positive impact on his/her problem solving skills. Knowing the art of being-a-self-critic is indispensable, as it is o...

Did you know that Venus spins backwards?

The night sky has always been a spellbinding scenario for anyone interested in Stars and the Universe. Celestial bodies also played a pivotal role in navigation when man first started exploring the earth. Among the shining stars in the sky, Venus, the brightest planet in Solar system will be visible just after sunset or just before the dawn as a bright object. Venus is a planet similar to our Earth in size but different in many ways. It has mountains, volcanoes and looks like a very active planet. Though Venus is not the closest to the Sun, it is one of the hottest planets, when compared with the other planets. Metals like lead are like puddles of melted liquid because of the heat Venus holds.  The planet is an unusual one because it spins in the opposite direction of the Earth and most of other planets. Venus actually spins upside down and thus, while looking at the rotation of other planets we feel like it is rotating backwards. All the planets in the...

It was the the key factor that gave the power of steering and maintaining the aircraft's equilibrium to the pilot. To design wings for flights they observed birds and found out that the wings were balanced for angle and control. This led to the concept of 'Wing Warping'. The Wright Brothers were successful in their experiment and flew the first glider which is known as the 'Wright Glider'.
